Designed for lifelong learners, Great Courses presents streaming video lectures led by professors and subject matter experts on a wide variety of topics. Join Maizie Valdez, library staff member and rock enthusiast, at the library for this 12-week Great Courses series on Practical Geology! We will watch two half-hour video lectures per week, with time for discussion at the end of each session.
Practical Geology covers the essential background of rocks, minerals, and landforms with a focus on applying this knowledge in the field. With video lectures taught by award-winning professor and geologist James F. P. Cotter, the course instructs you how to use a rock hammer, how to study an outcrop, how to find and prepare fossils, how to assess soil and groundwater, and much more. You will even discover how to prospect and pan for gold.
This course surveys beaches, rivers, canyons deserts, glaciers, volcanoes, and caves, highlighting some of the most spectacular geologic sites in the world, which Professor Cotter encourages you to visit. You can also apply what you learn in this course to the fascinating local geology of our Texas Hill Country!
