MFPL Adult Programming Librarian – Team Lead

Job Description

Summary

As leader of the Adult Programming Team, this position reports to the Programming Manager and Library Director. The librarian provides library services to adults, including, but not limited to: planning and executing a broad range of Adult Programming (70%), managing the Large Print and Library of Things collections including purchasing, inventory, and weeding (20%), reference and reader’s advisory (5%), and other duties as assigned to support the Programming Department and Library operations (5%).

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in Adult Education
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in public libraries
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in program delivery
  • Minimum 1 year of leadership/supervisory experience 

Preferred:

  • Experience with Collection Development
  • Familiar with G-Suite products for professional communication

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the Adult Programming Department to oversee adult library programming, either by planning and conducting programs themselves, collaborating with external organizations, or contracting with teachers/workshop leaders
    • Coordinate approximately 100 programs per month
      1. areas include: Leisure Learning, Literacy/Book Clubs, Gardening/Outdoors, Arts and Culture, Civic Engagement, Technology/Makerspace, and Performing Arts
      2. Programming includes ongoing language classes, book clubs, art and music classes, social groups, health/wellness programming, and Makerspace programming
    • Develop/create new programs seasonally, either one-time events or ongoing classes
  • Collaborate with the Programming Team (Youth Services, Makerspace, Outreach) to coordinate general library programming such as:
    • Summer Library Program aligned with the CSLP theme 
      1. Creating weekly schedule of programs for duration of SRP
      2. Booking performers and program contractors
      3. Planning in-house programs such as parties, crafts, book clubs, storytimes
      4. Manage incentive system for reading, including gathering/ordering prizes and donations, and training staff and volunteers on prize distribution/pick-up
      5. Help plan and manage SLP Kick-off, sign-up, and t-shirt distribution
    • Other Seasonal Programs including
      1. Polar Express Festival
      2. Literary Festival
      3. How-To Festival
      4. PuzzlePalooza
  • Manage Large Print collection
    1. Purchase books and materials 
    2. Assess damaged materials for repair or replacement
    3. Inventory and weed collection annually
    4. Assess donated LP materials for the collection, prizes, or Friends “Book Nook”
    5. Work with librarians on the collection team to implement guidelines and policies
  • Manage Library of Things collection
    1. Add new kits, tools, supplies, and materials to the Library of Things (1-2 items per month), in collaboration with the collection team 
    2. Maintain neat and orderly Library of Things storage and shelving, to allow easy access for circulation staff and checkouts
    3. Write and update policies for individual Library of Things materials
    4. Maintain records for patrons approved for borrowing Library of Things materials
  • Assist patrons and families 
    1. Provide Reader’s Advisory, reference and technology assistance for Adult Patrons
    2. Manage lost/damaged materials and blocked accounts for Large Print and Library of Things materials
  • Staff the Information and Technology Desks on a regular schedule
  • Maintain tidiness and organization of Adult Programming working areas, including program supplies and storage areas
  • Attend conferences and workshops and keeps abreast of current trends and emerging technologies, issues and research in librarianship; participates in professional organizations and meets with other local library program coordinators to share ideas and strengthen skills
  • Create, contribute to, and proofread the Adult Programming Team’s monthly report for the Library Director and Board of Trustees
  • Fill in for other members of the Programming Team and Library Staff as needed
